European Union Withdrawal Agreement Bill 2019
It is clear that this bill reveals a number of things that can be described as truthful. First, the government`s intention, both in the treaty and in the development of the legislation, is to bring us to a free trade agreement that, in reality, should be very difficult to negotiate and that will have to be negotiated next year. Who said that? The man was sitting in front of me: the Prime Minister himself. He wants us to speak out on labour laws, but he makes fun of her if he gets the chance. He will never take care of the people who work in this country. The Prime Minister promised almost everything in today`s debate, but if he had paid so much attention to the protection of workers` rights and the protection of our environment, he would have maintained these provisions in a legally binding withdrawal agreement and would not have deferred them to the non-binding political declaration. Why should we believe a word he says now? That is why TUC, Unison, Unite and the SAR all recognize that his eleventh-hour comments are now worthless. In the area of employment and manufacturing, this agreement will reduce market access for our main trading partner and leave our producers without a customs union. As we have heard in many speeches, Members have heard desperate demands from businesses in their ridings, all of whom say they need smooth supply chains.
That is why I ask all Members to do the right thing: let us work together to ensure that a comprehensive customs union is closely linked to our future relations with the EU. The withdrawal agreement provides for a transitional period until 31 December 2020, during which time the UK will remain in the internal market, to ensure the smooth flow of trade until a long-term relationship is concluded. If no agreement is reached by then, the UK will leave the single market without a trade deal on 1 January 2021. The withdrawal agreement is closely linked to a non-binding political declaration on future relations between the EU and the UK. Compatibility with the Good Friday Agreement was only vaguely achieved by effectively keeping Northern Ireland in the customs union and in the internal market, thus ending the economic coherence of the British state. Far from eliminating the backstop, as the British government and the Prime Minister claim, it is now being implemented as a policy in the Northern Ireland Withdrawal Agreement – a frontal stop, as some have said. In my country, people ask, “If it`s good enough for Northern Ireland, why isn`t it good enough for Wales?” He`s got the right hon.
